Annually, more than 3.5 million trees are planted, selected and transformed into raw material for BERNECK® products. The area of native reservations protected by BERNECK® associated to forest plantations is approximately 66 thousand hectares (equivalent to 660km² – 7.5 times larger than the area of Manhattan) in the states of Paraná, Santa Catarina and Mato Grosso.
The planted forests, along with the native reservations, contribute to the regulation of hydrological cycles, the control of soil erosion and quality, the conservation of biodiversity and the capture or sequestration of carbon, essential to reduce the effects of climate change in the world.
The Company also develops several actions aimed at preserving the environment, such as sustainable forestry management, wastewater treatment, pollution control, solid, liquid and gaseous waste management, regular environmental education campaigns, minimum cultivation in forests, among others.
WE REAP WHAT WE SOW
BERNECK® SUSTAINABLE FORESTS
BERNECK® maintains more than 132 thousand hectares of land for forest cultivation, including 124 thousand hectares in the states of Paraná and Santa Catarina intended for Pinus and 8 thousand hectares in the state of Mato Grosso intended for Teak. All wood processed and marketed by BERNECK® is originated from planted forests, avoiding the exploitation of native forests and ensuring employment and income in the countryside for many families.
The sustainable practices of forest management adopted in its forests ensure the rational use of natural resources for scale and long-term production of the raw material that supplies its plants. The protection of fountainheads and the restoration of riparian forests are part of the forest programs at BERNECK®.
BERNECK® has FSC® (Forest Stewardship Council® – FSC-C115987) certification. The FSC is an international certification system that recognizes the highest levels of forest management, ensuring to its customers and consumers products of wood originated from forests managed in an environmentally responsible, socially beneficial and economically feasible manner.
SAVING OF NATURAL RESOURCES
In the industrial units of Araucária and Curitibanos, residues of the production process – the Pine bark and the wood dust generated in the sorting, grinding and sanding processes – that would be disposed in the environment, produce heat and steam through biomass burning. This clean and renewable energy corresponds to approximately 50% of the energy used in the industrial processes, saving natural resources and reducing production costs. Part of this waste is originated in other industries.
In the process of forest replanting, BERNECK® adopts the minimum cultivation, not using fire for the preparation of the areas. In the manufacture of wooden panels, 50% of all wood used come from waste from other industries. The industrial units were entirely designed to capture rainwater to be used in the industrial processes.
